DTI Consumer Welfare Undersecretary Zenaida C. Maglaya explains, “For four years, Konsyumer Atbp. has been an effective medium of the DTI to reach consumers nationwide to inform them of their rights and responsibilities as consumers as well as on the significance of standards for product safety and quality to be protected from substandard goods. More importantly, the program teaches its avid listeners to be vigilant and to make intelligent choices when buying products or availing of services, which have helped the government to curtail illegal trade practices and to avert the proliferation of substandard products in the market.”

“Being at the forefront of consumer protection, DTI through Konsyumer Atbp., has intensified it information campaign, taking into consideration the fact that a well-informed citizen is the best protected consumer. Accordingly, with our regional and provincial offices nationwide, we have strengthened our partnership with different government agencies and the private sector to make the market safe for the consumers,” adds Usec. Maglaya.

With its wide market reach, KATBP has become an effective channel for the public to report unlawful trade activities in the market.  It is also an efficient feedback tool of the DTI, wherein each season it has responded to thousands of queries, comments and complaints from consumers nationwide and even abroad.

The first part of KATBP’s 4th Anniversary episode was aired on 21 February 2009, wherein it kicked-off its series of discussions on DTI’s Comprehensive Livelihood and Emergency Employment Program (CLEEP) with Secretary Peter Favila as the key resource speaker.

The Secretary, together with guests from DTI’s Philippine Trade Training Center (PTTC) and Bureau of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise Development (BMSMED) emphasized the ongoing projects, trainings/seminars and the assistance extended to those Filipinos affected by the global financial crisis and to potential entrepreneurs and existing micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

For the 2nd part of the anniversary celebration, KATBP successfully held a taped-as-live remote broadcast in Puerto Princesa City in Palawan on 04 March 2009 at the Puerto Princesa City Coliseum, through the support and assistance of City Mayor Edward Hagedorn and Palawan Broadcasting Corporation (PBC) President Lourdes Ilustre.

The highlight of KATBP’s 4th Anniversary celebration was the conduct of the Konsumer Patrol Quiz, wherein 90 students from several schools in Puerto Princesa City competed to correctly answer a set of multiple choice questions on consumer-related issues and current affairs.  The winner of the Konsyumer Patrol Quiz and the 2009 KATBP’s Consumer Champion is Monica Padarin, a 4th year high school student from Palawan State University, wherein she received a cash prize, PS-marked appliance, KATBP shirt and bag, and KATBP anniversary gift items.
